LIVERMORE - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ordain be laying off 500 employees over the next month as the nuclear weapons research facility trims costs following a dress in management a lab spokeswoman said.

The cuts are designed to ease the lab past a $300 million funding overleap due to inflation employee health compassionate costs retirement costs and taxes which the lab must now pay since transitioning from public to private management under a consortium led by Bechtel Inc.
"We've got a $300 million problem," Houghton said.
The lab also is operating under 2007 funding levels of roughly $1.6 billion since Congress has not yet approved a new operating budget for the lab. Houghton said.
The lab also may lose some of its nuclear research work as the federal government shifts priorities which could further reduce funding. Houghton said.
All 2,000 of the affected workers ordain acquire layoff notices in the coming weeks and workers will be terminated based on seniority skills and other factors. Houghton said. The workers include those in administrative give technicians machinists and other supplemental laborers. Houghton said.
Flex-term workers undergo five- to seven-year employment contracts; temporary workers are hired through contractors she said.
